Cathedrals Tour

Here is a tour which I have just planned for clients wishing to see the wonderful Cathedrals of England. We used a combination of luxury town centre hotels and Travelodges. It can be altered to include any other places you may wish to visit, and is just as great in the Winter as in season.

Day 1
Airport greeting at Heathrow from flight TBA Drive southwest 1 1/4 hours to Winchester, to visit the Cathedral and surrounding area, about 2 hrs.
12.15 Leave Winchester and drive to local pub for lunch, perhaps The Mayfly in the River Test valley and on to Salisbury, arriving about 14.45. Here you can stay in the town centre, to enjoy the cathedral and town

Day 2
09.00 Collect from Red Lion to drive West to Warminster, 45 mins where in the church you can see the George III organ, 1 hr.
10.45 Further drive 1 hr West to Wells to see the Cathedral, and Chapter House if open 2 1/4 hrs inc. lunch
14.00 Drive North 35 mins to Bath where we stay in the town, arriving about 14.30. Check into Marlborough House, then Julian can take you to visit the Abbey and the lovely Georgian town. Dinner in the town, Laura can make a reservation for you.

Day 3
09.30 Motorway drive North 1 hr to Gloucester to visit the cathedral, 1 hr.
11.30 Motorway drive North 50 mins to Worcester to visit the cathedral.
13.30 A40 drive East via Fairford and Burford to Oxford arriving about 17.30. Fairford, St Mary's with 28 windows of 15c. - 16c. stained glass depicting the Creation to the Last Judgement. In Oxford there is a tourist bus from the station to visit Christ Church Cathedral and the rest of this pedestrianised town, and in the evening you can take a local taxi back to our hotel.

Day 4
08.30 North 1 hr to Warwick to see St Mary's 1 hr
10.30 Drive 1/2 hr to Coventry to visit the old and new Cathedrals and precinct.
12.00 It is then a long drive to York, to stay in the centre and see the Minster, arriving about 15.00

Day 5
There will be time in the morning to see some of the city's museums, 11.00 leaving South via Beverley to Lincoln, arriving about 15.00 to visit the Castle and Cathedral and stay in the town

Day 6
09.00 Drive South via Boston Stump to Peterborough, arriving about 12.30
14.00 on to Norwich to enjoy the town centre and cathedral, arriving about 16.30.

Day 7
08.30 Drive South 1 1/2 hrs to Bury St Edmunds to visit the abbey 1 1/2 hrs and then 45 mins to Ely to visit the cathedral. 2 hrs
14.15 Drive 45 mins into Cambridge to stay in the town centre to visit King's College Chapel, my old College, Christ's, and the town.

Day 8
09.00 Drive south on M11 via Greensted to Waltham Abbey, 1 1/2 hr visit.
11.30 Motorway drive over the Thames and through Kent to Canterbury. arriving about
14.30, to see the town and cathedral.

Day 9
08.30 Motorway drive West to Guildford, to visit the cathedral 1 1/4 hrs on top of the town.
12.00 Across country drive 1 hr to Windsor, to enter the Castle and see St George's Chapel 1 1/2 hr visit.
14.30 Drive East 1 hr along the Thames to visit Hampton Court Palace including King Henry's Chapel.
16.30 Evening drive into London to Travelodge, High Holborn, London WC1

Day 10
In London on your own. St Paul's, Westminster Abbey, St Martins in the Fields, Southwark Cathedral, St Bartholomew The Great near Smithfield also interesting.

Day 11
Morning shopping for gifts. Return flight time TBA. Julian available if required to take you to the airport.
